Choosing Backsplash Materials

Families spend a good portion of their time in the kitchen.  Whether you like to cook or to entertain or just relax at home, your kitchen is the focal point of your home.  To make it a beautiful focal point, an impressive tile kitchen backsplash will help you make a wasted visual space between cabinet and counter top a place for you to display your style and artistry.  There is a wide variety of styles, textures, colors, and materials now available to use for a tile backsplash.

Traditionally, the most common type of tyle for the kitchen is ceramic or porcelain tile.  These tiles do not have the same qualities.  Both have advantages and disadvantages, so it is important to know the difference.  Ceramic tile is made out of clay and is fired in a kiln  It is then finished with a colored or patterned glaze, which is what you view on the top of the tile.  This type of tile tends to be a little less durable, but are easier to cut than porcelain tiles.  Porcelain tiles are actually made from porcelain dust that is pressed, and they are typically denser and stronger than ceramic tiles.  The pattern and color is not just found on the top of the tile, but throughout the tile, from top to bottom.  Therefore they can be made in a glazed, highly polished, or a matte finish.  Both of these types of tiles come in standard sized from one inch by one inch and up.  Tiles are installed using tile mastic with grout that is used in order to fill the spaces between the tiles to finish the look.  The grout color you choose can even be coordinated with the colors of your style so that the grout fits right in with your color palette.

Since the glaze on the tile acts as a sealer, you will not need another sealer.  If you have used unglazed tiles, they will need to be sealed.  The grout in between should also be sealed to prevent staining.  There are many wonderful colors and designs available for you to choose from if you are interested in ceramic or porcelain tile.  One neat idea is for your children to decorate your tiles and then fire them for your kitchen.  This would add an extra special touch.

Glass tile is also starting to become popular.  This type of tile is installed using a special white mortar or an unsanded grout.  Glass tiles will allow you just as much waterproofing as the ceramic tiles will.  Glass provides a very shiny reflection off of your wall.  Glass can also be used as an accent with other tiles to create a beautiful pattern of different textures and shine.

Another type of tile that creates a striking look is metal tiles.  These tiles are available in aluminum, copper, and chrome.  You can get them in brushed or shiny finishes.  Metal tiles are able to be installed using the regular tile grout that you would use for ceramic or porcelain tiles, and it gives you a modern and unique look.

Since stone and marble counter tops have become so popular, there has been an increase in interest in stone and marble tiles on the kitchen backsplash.  They can provide a veined look to your backsplash or they can be placed in patterns.  Stone tiles are also used similarly to ceramic types, but some stone tiles may not be sealed and can absorb water, stains, and grease.  Marble and stone tiles are also considerably heavier than traditional ceramic tiles, so that is something to consider as well.

When caring for your tile, be sure to read the directions and recommendations from the manufacturer about how to clean and maintain your tile.  It is important not to use anything that will be abrasive to your tile, or you may end up scratching, removing finishes, and dulling the shine of your tile.  If you take care of your tile, it will continue to provide you with many years of beautiful design in your kitchen!

A design that could be used for a back splash area.

Getting a good decorated tile back splash design can really add some color to your kitchen.  A good design is not hard to find as long as you get a basic decorative scheme that you are going for.  Many people work out their kitchen designs so that they can match up everything and provide one great looking kitchen from all aspects.  You can find some great designs available out there or maybe look into creating your own style.  When choosing your color scheme you want to choose something that matches the style and color scheme of your kitchen already.  You do not want to put something new in that does not work or clashes with what you already have in place.  If you are not redoing your entire kitchen then you should base your back splash options off of what will look nice and well matched with what is already in place.  Color coordinating your kitchen will help it to provide a great looking kitchen that matches and is stunningly beautiful.  Instead of wasting time with an ugly looking kitchen match you back splash tiles to your kitchen themes already and make it all match so that it is a great looking kitchen for you to do your cooking in.

You can find many patterns to put up tile in as a back splash area.  Tile is great because you can make it into all kinds of designs and styles.  You can cut pieces down and make your own pattern or mix and match colors to come up with your own scheme.  Putting up the tile is not hard to do once you figure out the basic pattern they are all going to be installed in.  Some may like to have straight rows and columns of tiles that go straight across the whole thing.  Others may want something that is not so straight and a little bit off the all and more original.  You can change the patter to fit how you want as long as you do it in a way that all the measurements still come out right and looks great.  For the really creative the options are endless as they can some up with their own patterns that mix and match a combination of sizes, colors, styles, and designs to create a truly original and unique back splash area for your kitchen.  Some may choose to mix in some larger tiles with the smaller ones to provide something that may break up the mundane look of straight lines and one sized tiles.  Get some creativity and see what you can come up with.  Use your creative juices to make your kitchen one of the coolest ones in the neighborhood and leave your neighbors in awe of your creative abilities that are now beautifully portrayed on your wall with your back splash tiles.

Please tell me what kind of stone is used in the picture with oak cabinets..It looks like 4 x 4 shiney slate tiles. I like the colors of slate, but like the shiney surface. Thanks. Gail
